Danzón no. 2 was written in 1994 by the Mexican Arturo Márquez. The work has received great acclaim from its premiere in the same year. Not only in Mexico, where some have even called it "a second national anthem", but internationally it has been performed countless of times.

A danzón is a dance of Cuban origin and means for the Latin American world what the waltz means for Europe.

Márquez now has a patent on this type of dance; he composed eight. However, the second is the only one written for orchestra, the other seven are for smaller ensembles.
